Once upon a time, the Church of England had a Church of England Men’s Society, with branches all over the land;  and St Mary’s, Penwortham had a flourishing branch of the Society.

Although declining general interest eventually led to the disbanding of the CEMS, both nationally and locally, the St Mary’s branch decided to change its name to ‘St Mary’s Men’s Society’ but otherwise to carry on regardless with a programme of roughly monthly discussion of matters of current interest interspersed with social events (some open to gentleladies as well as gentlemen) from time to time.

This worked well for quite a few years, but in recent times the number of Society members willing and/or able to attend regular meetings has fallen to such an extent that at our last Annual General Meeting it was regrettfully decided to wind the society up. All the relevant paperwork was passed to the PCC for retention.
